What Is Corneal Cross-Linking?
Corneal cross-linking is the latest treatment for keratoconus. It involves the administration of Vitamin B2 drops (riboflavin) to the cornea paired with precise exposure to ultraviolet light for up to 30 minutes to encourage the proteins within the corneas to strengthen. This causes a chemical reaction in which the cornea becomes stiffer and flatter, thus stopping the progression of keratoconus. How Is Traditional Cross-Linking Done?
Corneal cross-linking is performed here at our office and takes around an hour to complete. The patient will receive anesthetic drops before one of our surgeons gently removes the epithelium (the outer layer of the cornea). From there, riboflavin drops are applied for 30 minutes, and a special UV light is administered for another 30 minutes or less. After the procedure, a bandage contact lens is placed and worn for about a week post-op. Patients may notice some fogginess in their vision at first, but after a month, their sight should be clear and precise. If you have keratoconus in both corneas, you will need to return in 1 – 3 months to receive your treatment for the second eye.

Yes, it is generally safe for a majority of patients. The corneal cross-linking procedure is FDA-approved and has a very high success rate. In studies, the success rate was 95%, with 75% of patients showing decreased keratoconus and 70% experiencing visual acuity. Complications were experienced in only about 3% of patients.
Is corneal cross-linking painful?
No, it isn’t. During the corneal cross-linking procedure, your eye will be numbed with anesthetic drops to keep you comfortable. In the recovery period, some patients may experience discomfort, but it usually only lasts about 3 – 5 days.
How long does a corneal cross-linking procedure take?
